2nd Ebola case confirmed among 20 suspected in Congo

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Saturday that an outbreak of Ebola in the far north of the country had been declared by Congo's health minister.

The WHO has not yet imposed any travel restrictions for the area in which the cases were discovered, but it confirmed in a press release the investigation into the outbreak's severity was ongoing. This time it is in the jungles of central Africa, where populations are small and scattered, and people know about the Ebola virus.

The outbreak is situated in Likati, Bas Uele province located in the northern part of the country.

Scottish nurse Pauline Cafferkey nearly died twice after contracting the virus during work in Sierra Leone.

The country "has taken all necessary measures to respond quickly and efficiently to this new outbreak", Ilunga said.

There is no specific treatment for Ebola, which is spread through the bodily fluids of people exhibiting symptoms.

The EU was at the forefront of the response to the Ebola outbreak in Western Africa in 2013-2016.

The Ebola outbreak is not the first to have occurred in the DRC, with several others recorded between 2014 and 1976 and the worst having claimed 280 people in 1976.

The first suspected case was of a 39-year-old male who presented onset symptoms on April 22 and died on arrival at a health facility. Since then, the country has witnessed at least nine outbreaks - more than any other country - with the latest coming in 2014.

The GAVI global vaccine alliance said on Friday that some 300,000 emergency doses of an Ebola vaccine developed by Merck could be available in case of a large-scale outbreak, but it would be up to the World Health Organization and others to determine "if and when deployment of vaccine into this outbreak is warranted".

Medics across the country have received medical briefings on the Ebola alert.

Three years ago, airport and health authorities had tightened the screening of arriving passengers at the Naia amid fears of a worldwide spread of the virus.

The Nigerian government has urged its citizens not to panic following the recent Ebola outbreak in Congo.

Earlier, the Minister had a meeting with the Airport Manager Alhaji Sani Muhammed, who assured Adewole of the readiness of all the airport staff to work together in ensuring that Ebola does not come in the country.

"On May 10, 2017, a multi-disciplinary team led by the Ministry of Health and supported by the WHO under the new WHO Emergency Programme, and partners, was deployed to Likati health zone to conduct in-depth field investigation".

The WHO also is prepared to use successfully tested vaccines if needed.
