Colbert has good week in ratings despite controversy

Stephen Colbert used words about Donald Trump that made his audience gasp during his May 1 show

"Midnight Confessions" is a popular segment on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert".

Colbert then brought out a group of Stewart's former correspondents including Samantha Bee, Ed Helms, John Oliver, and Rob Corddry. Colbert said two nights later that he might have changed some of his language, but didn't apologize for the attack; the late-night host said he was angry with how Trump treated CBS "Face the Nation" host John Dickerson in an interview. And, yes, Fallon does tend to do rather nicely in the local ratings, although Stephen Colbert has done better of late.

Fake news heroes assemble!

None of this was lost on Stephen's guest and former boss, Jon Stewart. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said on May 4 that the commission would review complaints received about Colbert's joke.

And since then, well, nothing has happened, unless you count a boost in Colbert's ratings.

"I think that's what this proves", Colbert agreed.

"You see a no-talent guy like Colbert", the President told Time.

"But you know he's investigating Trump's campaign's ties to Russian Federation? Now you literally shovel it".

All jokes aside, Colbert did give credit where credit was due and thanked Stewart, especially, for getting him the job.

"The only thing your mouth is good at", Colbert said of Trump, "is being Vladimir Putin's c-- holster". "Like, it's the difference between insult and injury".

"Why in this country we try to hold comedians to a standard we don't hold our leaders to", he asked.

A comic sketch flashed back to spoof Colbert's departure from "The Daily Show" in 2005. "I have jokes; he has the launch codes".

One last team huddle before tonight's epic #LSSC. Colbert said they hadn't yet discussed O'Reilly's exit from Fox News Channel, which happened last month after the New York Times reported that the network paid $13 million to multiple women through the years to settle sexual harassment claims. "The same character, half an hour later, half a block away". As he packed up his lucky Steve Carell mug and tangerine iBook, Bee walked in, shocked her colleague was leaving during George W. Bush's presidency. I've been seeing you in the news.

"I can't believe you're leaving us, Stephen, it's insane", Helms added.

"[My producer] came over at the moment and she goes, 'What's the problem?'" Colbert recounted.

"We're fighting over which one of us gets your office", Corddry said.

Corddry even hung up a poster of his favorite comedians: Bill Cosby andJ ared from Subway.

His Midnight Confessions book, coming September 5 from Simon & Schuster, will feature some of Colbert's funniest pleas for forgiveness from the show, as well as fan-submitted confessions.
