Astronaut Peggy Whitson sets record of most cumulative days in space

The 57-year old female astronaut stayed 534 days in space and beat the record of her colleague, Jeff William. During the phone call, US President Trump joked about sending astronauts to Mars during his presidency.

President Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump and NASA astronaut Kate Rubins gathered in the Oval Office this morning for a video conference with Whitson and her crewmate, NASA astronaut Jack Fischer. "And I'd like to know how does it feel to have broken such a big and important record?"

Whitson said it's "a huge honour" to break such a record. "It's an honor for me, basically to be representing all the folks at NASA who make space flight possible and who make me setting this record feasible". Is there a schedule? "And when would you see that happening?"

According to NASA astronaut, Peggy Whitson that the bill signed by US President Donald Trump in March giving the fund of $19.5 billion for the agency to send astronauts from the desired planet this coming 2030s.

"Water is such a precious resource up here that we also are cleaning up our urine and making it drinkable", Whitson continued. The President replied that he wanted the endeavor to be done during his first, or "at worst", his second period, so it should speed up a little.

Politely, Ms Whitson replied: "Well, I think as your bill directed it will be approximately in the 2030s".

The International Space Station commander surpassed the record of 534 days, two hours and 48 minutes for most accumulated time in space by an American. She was already the most experienced female astronaut in U.S. history and the oldest woman in space. She joined NASA in 1989 and was picked as a candidate to be an astronaut seven years later.

Hopefully her achievements will do the same in kind for the next generation. She was named project scientist of the Shuttle-Mir Program in 1992. She is also the first woman to have commanded the station twice.

By the time she returns to Earth in September, she'll have logged 666 days in orbit over three flights.
