Former FBI Asst. Director: Trump and the FBI Are Not 'At War'

Trump also reiterated his point that collusion between Russians and the Trump campaign is a story used by the Democrats "as an excuse for losing the election". The president then turned the conversation to whether Comey would pledge his loyalty to him. News confirms a report that Trump had asked for a pledge of loyalty from Comey during a dinner in the early days of his administration.

Whether or not they were honest in those expressions, the reality is that congressional Democrats did not ask for Trump to fire Comey.

Comey, they said, declined to make such a pledge but told Trump he would always give him "honesty". Through it all, White House officials were unable to shake the focus on an investigation of Russian interference in last year's U.S. election.

Noted legal scholar Laurence Tribe told AFP that if Comey did indeed answer Trump's question, it would violate Department of Justice rules and "would be unthinkably unethical and unprofessional in this situation".

"Jim Comey was the CEO of the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

October 31, 2016 - After Comey announces the re-opening of the investigation into Clinton's emails, less than two weeks before the November 8 election, Trump is full of praise for the FBI director.

Trump reiterated his view that reports about collusion with Russian Federation were "fabricated".

Donald Trump asked his now-fired FBI director on three occasions whether he was the target of ongoing investigations, he said Thursday, stoking allegations of presidential interference.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders insisted the information she and her colleagues offered was consistent. It said "President Trump acted based on the clear recommendations of both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions".

At the dinner described by Trump in his interview with NBC, the conversation with Comey was quite different. Comey was tasked by his fellow intelligence directors to also pull Trump aside and inform him about a secret dossier suggesting that Russian Federation might have collected compromising information about him.

But Mr Trump on Thursday acknowledged for the first time that the Russian Federation investigation, which he dismissed as a "made-up story", was also on his mind as he ousted the man overseeing the probe. Press Secretary Sean Spicer says "there's no reason to believe he doesn't [have the president's full confidence] at this time". And two, there was a written statement on the Comey firing.

"We finally agree on something Rosie", he wrote on Twitter, attaching a tweet of hers that simply said: "FIRE COMEY".

May 10, 2017 - Trump tweets that Comey had lost everybody's confidence, adding that he aims to "bring back the spirit and prestige of the FBI".

"There's a big thing going on which is spying, you can call it anything you want - the unmasking and the spying - and to me that's the big story right now", he raved.
