Germany detains Syrian teen allegedly planning Berlin attack

The 17-year-old suspect was arrested in Uckermark, a district some 100 km northeast from Berlin.

Police, however, said neither the suspect's nationality nor his "concrete attack plans" could be confirmed yet as investigations continued, according to Reuters.

Germany saw a number of violent attacks by Islamic extremists a year ago, including the truck attack on a Berlin Christmas market that left 12 victims dead and dozens of others injured.

Special forces arrested the Syrian teenager after police received a tip-off, Brandenburg police tweeted (in German).

He had told his family he was becoming a jihadist and sent them a goodbye message, officials said.

The state Interior Ministry's office identified the suspect as a Syrian.

According to the paper, the teen has been living in a home for unaccompanied minor refugees in Uckermark since 2016. The home he was living in is now being searched by the state criminal investigation office.

Further details, including those of the alleged plot, were not immediately available.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to temporarily open the country's borders at the height of the European migrant crisis divided opinion and immigration is an important political issue ahead of the parliamentary election later this year.
