Hogenkamp backs renaming of Margaret Court Arena

Australian tennis great Margaret Court says she feels bullied by a fierce backlash over her views on gay marriage

Australian tennis great Margaret Court says she feels bullied by a fierce backlash over her views on gay marriage

But away from the court, Stosur is passionately backing Casey Dellacqua in her stance against Margaret Court after the legendary 24-times major victor created a firestorm with her public opposition to same-sex marriage.

Court, now a church pastor, complained on Thursday that the carrier's support of marriage equality "leaves me no option but to use other airlines where possible for my extensive traveling".

Even the Prime Minister was dragged into the debate after calls to have Court's name removed from one of Melbourne Park's show courts.

She added: "I've seen the recent comments from certain players and I think she doesn't have such a good point where she is now, because I see that many players comment against her".

Forget Australia's ropeable sport-loving public and media figures: Margaret Court Arena might just face a player boycott during next year's Australian Open, according to Sam Stosur.

Setting aside the absurdity of a sports stadium holding political views, this kerfuffle is just the latest example of a growing intolerance towards anyone who deviates from polite-society dogma.

Ms Court said she and people who shared her views were being persecuted for their perspective: "We're getting persecuted; we're getting bullied because we do have free speech also".

Meanwhile, nine-time Wimbledon victor Martina Navratilova weighed into the debate on Twitter, with the retired star delivering a carefully-aimed jibe towards Court suggesting it is time to rename Melbourne's iconic Margaret Court Arena in the wake of the furore.

"Margaret, I appreciate that might be your view, but there is polling suggesting that 62 to 64 per cent are in support of this", Aly said in reference to the Australian population's support of same-sex marriage.

"I think we definitely should have it in Australia (same-sex marriage)".

Martina Navratilova tweeted that Margaret Court Arena at the Australian Open should change its name and maybe named after Evonne Goolagong Cawley, who became the first aboriginal woman to become a Grand Slam Champion.

"She's one of the greatest greats of tennis and that's why the arena is named after her". The more people get along the better and so it's a little bit disappointing. 'But it won't be in the Qantas lounge'.

"I don't think you should be that outspoken. I think it's a great thing when two people, regardless of their gender, find love and whatever".
