Inauguration Day: Macron to Become New French President

Macron has become the youngest president in France's history and the youngest leader since Napolean.

He listed a range of challenges facing the country, from migration fluxes, to the "excesses" of global capitalism and terrorism.

He said France's place was in the European Union "which protects us and enables us to project our values in the world" but that the 28-member bloc needed to be "reformed and relaunched".

Macron announced his determination to push ahead with reforms to free up France's economy and pledged to press for a "more efficient, more democratic" EU.

Macron has promised to refresh France's parliament and his party - La Republique En Marche (REM, Republic on the Move) - unveiled 428 out of its 577 candidates this week.

"He has been reporting on the French election from the start and has had direct access to Macron and many on his team, making him perfectly positioned to get to the bottom of who Macron is, and what he might plausibly achieve as president of France".

He will be Mr Macron's right-hand man, the top official in the Elysee administration and a key political advisor who is typically the main contact point for ministries, parties, unions and business leaders and plays an important role in crafting policies. Macron met for an hour with his predecessor, Socialist F.

Following the ceremony, Mr Macron accompanied Mr Hollande as he walked to his vehicle in the palace forecourt and drove away as the new president waved him off.

In his first speech as president, Macron said France had chosen "hope".

A former economy minister, Mr Macron quit Mr Hollande's Socialist government past year to launch his independent bid.

He's expected to name a prime minister imminently, and to show his commitment to reviving European unity.

On Sunday, Macron sought to inject fresh optimism into a French public so disillusioned with the political establishment that in the first round of the presidential elections almost half of its voters opted for candidates who wanted to blow up the nation's political order.

Macron is seeking to kickstart the French economy and overcome the sense of political malaise gripping the country. Macron will seek to reassure voters on the left and the right that he is not moving too far away from them - all while emphasizing his newcomer bona fides.

Macron then headed to a hospital outside Paris where soldiers wounded in military operations are treated.

A committed pro-European, Macron is also to underline his support for a strong alliance with Germany by heading to Berlin on Monday for a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel. Their average age is 46, compared to 60 for the outgoing assembly.

Macron's rise, marked by a 21-gun salute at the Esplanade des Invalides, signaled at least a pause in the anti-globalization trend that elevated businessman Donald Trump into the US presidency and led British voters to choose Brexit. Half of them are women.

Hollande vaunted his efforts to produce the Paris Agreement on fighting climate change, legalizing gay marriage in France and doing "everything possible to ensure that Greece stays in Europe".

France has been under a state of emergency since terror attacks in 2015 and remains on a high alert.
