It is time to impeach Donald Trump, says Congressman Al Green

White House on lockdown as yet another person tries to break

"You're essentially dangling in front of the person who's supposed to be investigating the chaos swirling around you, and perhaps you, you're basically saying, 'If you will assure me that I'm not going to be under investigation, then maybe I'll keep you on". At that time, the Texan said that firing Mr Comey would be an impeachable offense if it was done in order to stop an investigation into ties between the Russian government and Mr Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

"President Trump is not above the law". After the ouster last week, Trump appeared to encourage Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his deputy Rod Rosenstein to provide cover for a decision Trump conceded he had already made and scrambled to work out some consistent "story" for Comey's firing.

Allan Lichtman, a history professor at American University, told CBC that Trump's decision to fire Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey could be considered grounds for impeachment - although he's not sure Vice President Mike Pence would take Trump's place. "Trump can't say "You're fired" to the House of Representatives".

The comments have led to several experts in the U.S. opining that Trump has opened himself to possible charges of obstruction of justice - an impeachable offence. The only problem is that Tribe relies on actions, however ill-advised, that are well within President Trump's legal authority and right to perform and do not come anywhere close to actual obstruction of justice.

Now the United States is faced with a president whose conduct strongly suggests that he poses a danger to its system of government. But even that question, Tribe says, goes too far, since Trump was Comey's boss.

To say that this does not in itself rise to the level of "obstruction of justice" is to empty that concept of all meaning. "Add to that the fact that the White House pretty transparently conspired earlier with Rep. (Devin) Nunes to derail the House investigation into possible Russian collusion". Some Democratic elected officials have also increasingly begun floating impeachment since Comey's dismissal, which reports suggest was motivated by the president's personal mistrust. "Impeachment will happen if handful of Republicans in Congress join Dems to put country above party".
