Ransomware attacks What makes healthcare most vulnerable

Though the spread of the ransomware slowed Monday, many companies and government agencies were still struggling to recover from the first attack.

"I am anxious about how the numbers will continue to grow when people go to work and turn [on] their machines on Monday morning". On Friday, the world experienced the wrath of a well-coordinated ransomware attack, known as WannaCrypt.

Gas stations: State-run media in China reported that some gas stations saw their digital payment systems shut down, forcing customers to bring cash.

The meeting was called to assess the threat posed by a global computer ransomware attack, a senior administration official said. Fedex said it had experienced "interference with some of our Windows-based systems caused by malware".

In the US, "the list of victims is very small", a Department of Homeland Security official tells NPR, noting that it's still relatively early in the WannaCry attack. Europol said Monday that "very few" people have paid the ransom.

Smith's blog post did not address another factor in the ransomware's spread, one that hints at the difficulty of uniting against a hacking attack: Users of pirated Microsoft software are unable to download the security patch, forcing them to fend for themselves or rely on a third-party source for a solution.

WannaCry exploited a vulnerability in Windows revealed by the "Shadow Brokers".

"It was essentially an indiscriminate attack across the world", Europol director Rob Wainwright said.

"Microsoft's leadership stated this directly, they said the source of the virus was the special services of the United States", Putin said on the sidelines of a summit in Beijing.

The blame game has already started.

Every government computer has antivirus software, the provincial spokesperson said, and Manitoba "regularly updates security systems to ensure all information remains safe and protected".

The U.K.'s National Cyber Security Centre said Sunday that there have been "no sustained new attacks" of the kind that struck Friday.

"This attack provides yet another example of why the stockpiling of vulnerabilities by governments is such a problem", he said.

"An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the USA military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen", attorney Brad Smith wrote on Microsoft's blog.

At least one strain of the ransomware has proven especially vicious.

Installing the patch is one way to secure computers against the virus. That was "unheard of six months ago", Levy said.

The list of institutions affected has grown as more become aware of hacks and variants of the virus spread.

Nissan confirmed on Monday some units had been targeted, but that it had responded and there had been no major impact on its business. Korea Internet and Security Agency reports that those include several local firms as well.

In the USA, where the effects haven't appeared to be widespread, investigators believe additional companies have been attacked but have not yet come forward to report it, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

Putin said the incident was "worrisome" but had done "no significant damage" in Russian Federation and called for urgent worldwide talks on countering the hackers. That low-priced move redirected the attacks to the server of Kryptos Logic, the security company he works for. He said the situation was under control.

Brad Smith, Microsoft's president and chief legal officer, earlier said the code used in the attack was originally developed by the US National Security Agency.

Sixteen National Health Service organizations in the United Kingdom were hit, and some of those hospitals canceled outpatient appointments and told people to avoid emergency departments if possible. "At this stage, we do not have any evidence that patient data has been accessed".

'This weekend, whether it's in London, New York, Moscow, Delhi, Sao Paulo, or Beijing, we're putting this principle into action and working with customers around the world'.

A divert remained in place for trauma, stroke and urgent heart attack treatment, where diagnostic services are required, at the Lister Hospital, part of East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust (Midlands & East).
