I had never expected to finish my first Olympic trip with three fouls.

Jackson, the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, opened his season with a second-place finish at the Drake Relays in April.

Two-time Olympic champion Elaine Thompson of Jamaica overcame a slow start to win the women's 100 meters at the Shanghai Diamond League on Saturday.

Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo from Jamaica set the fastest time of 2017 in the women's 400 metres when she demolished the opposition to cross in 49.77, finishing nearly a second ahead of second-placed Natasha Hastings.

Olympic 5,000m silver medallist Hellen Obiri also hopes to return good times in her season opener while World 400m hurdles champion Nicholas Bett is targeting improved performance after a poor run in Doha.

Although it was not the best of his shows, the 25-year-old Qatari was delighted to maintain his winning streak in the prestigious Diamond League series.

The 23-year-old Bahamian is the defending champion in Shanghai after narrowly beating McPherson last year. China's national record holder Xue Changrui is also in the field.

He will line up alongside Spain's Orlando Ortega, who took Olympic silver a year ago, and a handful of others who have previously run sub-13 times including past world champion Aries Merritt of the United States. The 28-year-old Kenyan will be challenged by countryman Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich, last year's Diamond League victor.

A number of top men's sprinters, including Rio 100m silver medalist Justin Gatlin of the United States, are skipping Shanghai, leaving a depleted field for the race.

Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic champion, finished a disappointing fourth in his first race of the season in Doha last week and decided his form wasn't high enough to compete in Shanghai.

"It's all about preparing for the rest of the season and the world championships", added Thompson.

The Jamaican, who captured the women's 200m at the season-opening Doha Diamond League last week, pulled away at the 80m mark and eased to victory in 10.78 seconds, the fastest time in the world this season.

The home crowd will be delighted to see their beloved high jumper Zhang Guowei back in contention. He tried to match Barshim with a 2.33m leap but failed in all of his three attempts.

The Sarnia, Ont. native is also the defending world champion in the event.

Home shot putter Lijiao Gong, the London 2012 silver medallist, had expressed doubts over her form ahead of the meeting, but she rose to the challenge to win with 19.46m. She won silver in the 200 at the 2015 worlds, but didn't compete in the 100.

South Africa long jumper Luvo Manyonga has set a new Diamond League record after he took a massive leap of 8.61m at the 2017 IAAF Diamond League Shanghai on Saturday.

And as is tradition in Shanghai, the 110m hurdles will conclude the meeting and the organizers have assembled a field worthy of any global final.
