Murray, Konta find out French Open fate

Murray, the 2016 runner-up at Roland Garros to Novak Djokovic, admitted he had been sick since arriving in the French capital on Sunday.

Several top names will not feature in this year's tournament as 18-time grand slam champion Roger Federer is skipping the claycourt season, two-time champion Maria Sharapova was denied a wild card after returning from a doping ban, and three-time victor Serena Williams is expecting a child.

So much has changed for Djokovic since the Serb completed a career Grand Slam at the French Open past year by beating Andy Murray in the final. "I played the best player on clay three times in three tournaments", Thiem told reporters on Friday.

"I got to No. 1 in the world at the end of last year and there's been some times this year where it's been hard to keep up the motivation and set new goals", Murray said on Wednesday.

It would have been an eighth title in the Italian capital but in truth he probably won't have minded, the early exit giving him more time to recuperate ahead of his favourite grand slam. I'm trying to redefine myself and rediscover what kind of approach is the right one.

Providing she is fit to play, she will take on American Julia Boserup.

"I need to enjoy my struggle a little bit just now and that will help me get through it quicker, I believe".

"I will miss the French fans, who have always been so supportive, and I look forward to seeing them at Roland Garros next year".

Watson had come through qualifying on three previous occasions at Roland Garros but was never in contention against Hogenkamp and lost 6-0, 6-3 in an hour and 10 minutes.

Djokovic, who lost his No. 1 ranking to Murray past year, has won only one of his last 11 tournaments.

"Looking at the trophy again brings back lots of memories".

Djokovic starts his title defence against Marcel Granollers before a potential quarter-final with Dominic Thiem, while he could face favourite Rafael Nadal in the last four. "It was one of my most special feelings", he added.

The women's event is regarded as being wide open with Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka all absent.

Konta could meet Simona Halep or Elina Svitolina in the semi-final, but having beaten the former both times in previous meetings but losing twice to the latter, anything could happen should she make it that far, though Halep would have an easier run-in to this stage of the tournament.

The tournament will also see two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova making her comeback less than six months after she was stabbed during an attack at home in the Czech Republic.

"I'm ranked No. 1 in the world, I've been in worse positions than this", Murray said. Tournament organizers did not grant her a wild card.

Nadal boasts a sensational career record at Roland Garros - 72 wins and just two defeats, to Djokovic in 2015 and an injury-affected shock loss to Robin Soderling in 2009.
