Netflix Has Been Quietly Testing Out Price Increases For Aussie Users

A rather alarmist article from The Australian indicates that prices are going up down under.

While revenue for the more established cable industry is still expected to increase, researchers calculate that total revenue for companies like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Now grew 32 percent to $8.4 billion in 2016.

When asked whether the tax would be passed on to Australian subscribers, a Netflix spokesman said: "We collect and remit tax wherever we are legally obligated to do so".

First spotted by The Australian and later reported by News.com.au, the trial was acknowledged by Netflix but dismissed as one of many trials the company is constantly undertaking.

And previous year, Netflix's $2 monthly price increase for many customers - from $7.99 to $9.99 - led to a growth slowdown, as some subscribers left.

Tidelands continues Netflix's growing relationship with Australian content.

Netflix is marching ever closer to the 100 million worldwide subscribers milestone, partly helped by its commitment to original content such as Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, and many others. Considering that Netflix subscriptions can be cancelled at any time, it wouldn't make sense to implement this as a practice as users could easily circumnavigate it. That's what happens to frogs in a pot of hot water when you turn up the temperature slowly.

Called Tidelands, the show has been billed as a supernatural crime drama - and it delivers on the promise long-delivered by Netflix ANZ bosses, who vowed that they would enter the local TV production market.

'We can't wait to see Tidelands in 2018, ' one user said. Nicknamed the "Netflix Tax", the extended tax will start affecting companies like Netflix when it goes into effect on July 1.

"We continuously test new things at Netflix and these tests typically vary in length of time", Netflix said in a statement.

Could Netflix eventually charge surge pricing?

At this point, we're surprised there are still people who aren't signed up already.
