New Microsoft Surface Laptop: Specs, Design and New Windows 10 OS

The Surface laptop is being pitched as a competitor to Google's Chromebook and Apple's lower-end MacBook Air laptops with a clear focus on students who are just about to leave high schools.

According to Microsoft, it'll boot in just 15 seconds, and offer far more battery life than Windows 10 now chews.

Microsoft recently unveiled Windows 10 S, a version of the operating system that is designed for the classroom. This OS only supports applications available via the Windows Store.

Despite being a slightly confusing name to the general consumer, Windows 10 S will be a much slimmer version of Windows where everything that runs on the OS can be downloaded from the Windows Store.

Unlike the Chromebooks, Windows 10 S machines can run the full desktop versions of different apps. There's a bigger problem though, which is that even if Google ports Chrome to the Windows Store, or you find another browser that you like there, Windows 10 S won't allow you to change your default browser.

On its website, Microsoft also announced that Windows 10 S would be available for its partner devices including Acer, ASUS, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Samsung, and Toshiba.

"Microsoft claims to refresh the classic laptop form factor that our customers, especially college students, have been asking for and make a Surface that works seamlessly to showcase the best of Windows 10 S", says Panos Panay, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Devices, in a blog post.

Are you looking for a new laptop? Why Microsoft made this decision is beyond me, but if user feedback and demand grows to an unprecedented level, maybe Microsoft will change their minds.

Teachers will be able to update any Windows 10 Pro device to Windows 10S free of charge. So if you want to be able to switch between Windows 10 S and Windows 10 Pro, you'll need to pay $50. The stripped-down version of Microsoft's operating system created to avoid taxing low-cost hardware is aimed at schools, with laptops running the software priced as low as $189.

The first PC equipped with this operating system, the Surface Laptop, is now available to preorder starting from $999, with shipping scheduled from mid-June 2017. The base model includes 128GB of storage, 4GB of RAM and runs on an Intel Core i5 processor.
