"And if you aspire to lead, you will need courage, because leadership brings both honor and criticism", Pence said during his 10-minute commencement speech.

Browne told the Indy Star that school officials will only intervene if the protest "seriously disrupted" Pence's speech or put safety at risk.

A group called the Slippery Rock Huddle is expected to have about 300 people gathering on sidewalks and across campus to protest Pence's visit, according to WKBN.

The university is not particularly anxious about the protest.

CBS News noted that Notre Dame alumni have donated about 500 rainbow flags to be distributed to the graduates.

A second protest took place just outside the university campus, the South Bend Tribune reported, as local activists gathered to protest Pence on Angela Boulevard in South Bend, Indiana.

"But, Notre Dame is an exception, an island in a sea of conformity, so far spared from the noxious wave that seems to be rushing over much of academia", said Pence.

"For us, there's nothing that could be more in the spirit of the university and the university mission than to stand up for human dignity and the most vulnerable among us", Miranda said.

Ricketts also said the university administration has not resisted their protest.

Do you think that the Notre Dame students should protest?

After his address, Pence, who was also awarded an honorary degree, stood on the platform and shook hands as each graduate passed after being handed their diplomas.

"I think it's vitally important to come out and support people in rural Western Pennsylvania who have come out to have their voices heard", said protester Cheryl Lessin, of Cleveland.

"People follow people they respect so first and foremost you must aspire to be men and women of character", said Pence.

"At this very moment, President Trump is overseas, renewing America's role as leader of the free world", Pence said.

Pence opposition was felt near campus hours before the vice president arrived in South Bend. On Jan. 29, the school released a statement in which Jenkins urged Trump to rescind an executive order that banned entry to the United State of refugees, migrants and green-card holders from seven mostly Muslim countries.

Pence previously visited the University during his time as Governor of IN, meeting with College Republicans while he was on campus.

Vice President Mike Pence is in Grove City today, getting ready for his commencement speech at Grove City College.
