Roger Goodell: NFL to allow some flair in celebration

National Football League owners voted on multiple changes on Tuesday, including the reduction of regular-season overtime from 15 minutes to 10. And those that don't need to reps will have more time to rest. The "No Fun League" made a decision to lighten up a bit by allowing some celebrations that had been penalized in recent years.

The move to shorter overtimes is just one of the changes that have been approved for the 2017 season.

Goodell said that after internal discussions and talks with more than 80 current and former players, celebrations involving the use of the football as a prop, group demonstrations and players going to the ground to celebrate will now be allowed. That is why offensive demonstrations, celebrations that are prolonged and delay the game, and those directed at an opponent, will still be penalized. After seventy minutes of NFL football, even the most well-conditioned athletes are probably going to be pretty worn out. Players will be flagged for celebrations that take too long or taunt the opposing team.

Owners changed the rules regarding preseason roster cuts.

The NFL is obnoxious when it comes to pretending about player safety. Now teams no longer have to make their first cut to 75 until after another pre-season game.

"You've got all these superstars who are making millions of dollars, and you've got fans who are loving the celebrations", said Horn, who played for three National Football League teams before retiring after the 2007 season.

The NFL has been criticized for its strict officiating over recent years and has been relabeled as the "No Fun League".

One of the bigger changes to roster management is possibly with the I.R. designations. The downside here is that we may see an uptick in ties, given how many times we see teams trade field goals in overtime without being able to score a second time.

Injured Reserve Eligible PlayersTwo players are now allowed to return from Injured Reserve as opposed to one. Under the old rule, teams would trim rosters from 90 to 75 before the final preseason game, then 75 to 53 in the last cut down day. Now, there will be two such players for each team. Katherine Terrell of ESPN wrote about Lewis's disagreement with the new rule and quoted him throughout the story. It expands a 2012 rule that allowed teams to bring one player back after he spent eight weeks on IR, as well as a 2016 rule that allowed them to do so without placing a designated-to-return tag on a player right away.
