"Removing water will help reduce overall mosquito numbers and protect family members and neighbors from mosquito bites and mosquito-borne diseases", said Dr. Smith.
This can lead to an increased mosquito activity.

Testing has also seen a great reduction in the quantity of the type of mosquito species that can infect people, the culex variety. To help keep their numbers down, public health officials advise Californians to frequently check for, and eliminate, water-filled containers, clean and scrub bird baths and pet watering dishes, and dump water from dishes under potted plants.

Also, residents should report if they note an unusually high number of mosquitos. To prevent bites, consistently use mosquito repellent when outside, wear long sleeves and trousers, use air conditioning, and make sure window screens will keep mosquitoes out of the home. But infected buzzers could also be carrying the West Nile virus, which can be transmitted to both humans and animals. Because Zika can also spread through sexual contact, pregnant women and their sexual partners who have traveled to those areas should use condoms or avoid sexual contact during the course of the pregnancy.

DSHS Zika testing recommendations, insect repellent information and more is available at TexasZika.org. Texas recommends testing pregnant women who have traveled to areas with ongoing Zika transmission and anyone statewide with at least three of the four most common Zika symptoms: rash, fever, joint pain and conjunctivitis (eye redness).

With transmission occurring in Mexico, the border region remains the most likely area in Texas for Zika to spread, though much of the state is at risk due to the distribution of the mosquitoes that transmit the virus. The virus can cause a deadly infection in humans, particularly the elderly.

Dr. Smith urged for caution and prevention on the matter, as mosquitos can be the carriers of many diseases. WNV symptoms may include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach, and back.

Thompson said mosquitoes can't be eliminated but said it's important to prevent them from breeding.

There were two confirmed cases of West Nile in Windsor-Essex previous year, which is below the average.
