Vikings' Zimmer to take time off after latest eye surgery

Vikings' Zimmer has another surgery on right eye

A year ago, Zimmer missed the Vikings' early December game against the Cowboys after he underwent an emergency procedure to fix a detached retina on November 30. Zimmer spent 20 seasons as an assistant, defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator with the Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons and Cincinnati Bengals before finally becoming a head coach in 2014 for the Vikings.

Better in the spring than during the fall, he realized.

General manager Rick Spielman said Monday that the organization anticipates Zimmer to return to the job "in a few weeks".

Zimmer welcomed 350 kids to the Vikings' indoor practice facility Saturday, giving 200 spots to the Boys and Girls Club and opening up the remaining spots on a first-come, first-served basis. "We all agree Mike's health is the priority and we believe rest and recovery are in his best interest for the long term". He revealed to reporters that he underwent an eighth procedure on the eye last week, a trying seven-month stretch that has included several unplanned operations.

This article will be updated to provide more information as it becomes available. He has a 26-22 record in 48 games as an National Football League head coach. He can't fly for six weeks after the surgery, and doctors didn't want Zimmer to drive himself because of elevation changes on the route.

"The doctors all got together, and we had a long meeting about what's the best recuperation of this eye, and they said that I need to try to spend the next couple of weeks just working on my recovery", Zimmer said in the interview with KFAN.

He was told by doctors to take care of the eye quickly and had a follow-up procedure a week later.

"So the pressure in my eye was very, very high", Zimmer added.

Zimmer spoke with Allen over the phone en route to his ranch in Kentucky, where he will take a brief respite. Zimmer did admit that his coaching staff will send him videos every day from OTA's so he can monitor progress.

"It's unfortunate timing, but it's more important to do it now than during the season", Zimmer said. Cheese in Wisconsin? Hot dogs in Chicago?
