Android is the world's most popular mobile operating system, powering devices we use every day such as our smartphones, TV set-top boxes, and wearables. All this is happening just two days before Google kicks off its I/O conference wherein we could see the auto makers building a new infotainment for their vehicles, based on Android 7.0 Nougat.

More details on the technology and partnership will be revealed at Google's annual tech show on May 17.

"Your car's built-in infotainment system could allow you to control your air conditioning, sunroof, and windows, find the nearest restaurant with Google Maps, listen to Spotify or NPR, or just ask your Google Assistant for help-even when you leave your phone behind", Google Android product manager Haris Ramic wrote in a blog post.

Volvo Cars partners with Google to build Android into next generation connected cars. Audi is going to show off its implementation of the Android-based infotainment system in the new Audi Q8 Sport concept. "Google's platform and services will enhance the user experience by enabling more personalisation possibilities, while Android will offer increased flexibility from a development perspective", said Henrik Green, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.

Also, check out that Android steering wheel header image. Audi's MMI infotainment system has been kicking around for years, but Volvo's Sensus Connect system is relatively new. The announcement is but one small tidbit due to come out of Google's I/O conference this week.

The new partnerships take Google beyond Android Auto, an app that specifically provides drivers with navigation, streaming audio and communications services. Both Audi and Volvo, and any other automaker that uses Android, will have access to a vast library of current and future Android applications, whether the developer is Google, the automaker or a third party.
