The 55-year-old Italian - who replaced Quique Sanchez-Flores after he was sacked at the end of last term - has endured a poor end of season although they put up a spirited performance in the 4-3 defeat by champions Chelsea on Monday.

Walter Mazzarri will leave Watford after just one season in charge, despite keeping the Hornets in the Premier League.

Mazzarri joined Watford after a spell on the sidelines following his sacking by Inter in November 2014 after a disappointing 18-month spell in charge, but things did not go according to plan in England.

Walter Mazzarri will leave Watford at the end of the season, the Premier League club have announced.

Watford is in 16th place in the 20-team league and not in danger of relegation heading into its last match, at home against Manchester City on Sunday.

Aside from the three relegated clubs, only Burnley have scored fewer than the 40 goals Watford have netted in this season's top-flight.

But the Watford Observer understands Mazzarri's departure was as much his own decision as the club's board, with the Italian increasingly frustrated with ongoing communication issues which have dogged his stay in Hertfordshire.

Successor Quique Sanchez Flores led Watford to the FA Cup semifinals and a 13th-place finish in the Premier League but was sacked.

Watford are likely to take their time as they bid to find the right mould of manager to replace Mazzarri.

Earlier this morning, Ranieri could be backed at 3/1 to take over at Vicarage Road, however in the last hour his odds have been cut to as short as 6/5 with one bookie. They lost that clash 4-0 and now face another battle to keep hold of the Portuguese boss, with Sky sources understanding his contract has a relegation-based release clause.
