IMAGE OF THE DAY: Expedition 51 Flight Engineer Jack Fischer Of NASA Prepares For ISS Spacewalk

This marked the ninth spacewalk for space station commander Peggy Whitson and the first for flight engineer Jack Fischer. The avionics box will carry data connections and electricity to science experiments at the station.

Mission control radioed the astronauts that Friday's spacewalk will be limited to run around four hours, not the six-and-a-half hour duration originally planned, due to the problem.

WHNT News 19 will live stream the space walk right here within the story as well as the WHNT News 19 Facebook page. For now, they're sharing Whitson's hose.

"The biggest slice of awesome pie I've ever seen", said Fischer, using one of his favorite expressions to describe the scene.

Whitson and Fischer shared a second good cable, known as an umbilical, as they prepared to leave the station's airlock, which burned through some of their spacesuits' battery power.

With a full-duration 6.5-hour spacewalk, Whitson would have moved up to third in the world with almost 60 hours of EVA time over nine excursions, trailing only cosmonaut Anatoli Solovyev, with 78 hours and 21 minutes of spacewalk time over 16 EVAs, and retired astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria, with 67 hours and 40 minutes over 10 excursions.

The spacewalk was briefly delayed after NASA discovered a "small leak of water" in equipment that helps power their spacesuits.

It was discovered as the astronauts were seated in the airlock inside the space station.

This will be the ninth spacewalk for 57-year-old Whitson who is a record holder among United States astronauts for the longest period of stay in outer space while 43-year-old Fischer will venture his first spacewalk.

As of now, astronauts who have performed spacewalks have clocked up a total of 1,247 hours and 55 minutes working outside the station during 200 spacewalks in support of assembly and maintenance of the orbiting laboratory.

For Whiston, today's spacewalk also involves a little bit of unfinished business, albeit of the rather unglamorous kind. The 200 mark includes Russian spacewalks as well as U.S.

NASA succeeds in its historic spacewalk on Friday, although it all began with a micro-gravity curveball.
