Woman hopes to cash in on moon dust

The bag is expected to bring between $2 million and $4 million

The bag is expected to bring between $2 million and $4 million

When the bag returned to Earth, the USA government emptied it of its contents and dubbed it a national treasure. I really don't understand why NASA is so determined to have a bag with moon dust on display when I'm sure there's all kinds of artifacts that are on display that are a lot more impressive than a bag with moon dust.

It's not stardust, but moondust that an IL woman is hoping to cash in on.

The anonymous owner's $15 ring is expected to sell for around $450,000! Sotheby's auction will take place July 20, the 48th anniversary of the landing of Apollo 11.

Souvenirs from humankind's missions to the Moon are extremely rare; NASA usually holds on to moon rocks or moon dust instead of allowing private owners to keep them. During Neil Armstrong's historic trip to the moon in 1969, the astronaut filled the pouch with moon rocks from the lunar Sea of Tranquility.

One small stash for man, one giant wad of cash for a Chicago lawyer!

The true history of the bag went unknown for decades until 2014. He was later charged and convicted of stealing items that belonged to the government.

Federal agents confiscated the bag.

A subsequent clerical error led to the mislabeling of the bag as being from the 1972 Apollo 17 mission, which made its apparent value drop greatly.

Two years ago, this small bag was bought for $995 U.S. dollars.

Nancy Lee Carlson, from Chicago, bought the bag in 2015 at a seized-goods auction for a paltry $1,326 had no idea of it's incredible contents.

The story might have ended there had she not sent the bag to the Johnson Space Center in Houston to check its authenticity.

NASA kept the bag.

Carlson took NASA to court and was eventually granted the right to have the bag back.

Carlson went to court over the matter and won. Carlson contended that the sale was valid and that she was a bona fide purchaser.

Now the bag was safely returned to government hands. That woman now stands to get a hefty return on her investment, as the bag is expected to fetch $2m-$4m - though most of the profits are said to be going to charity.
