People leave donations near the burning 24 storey residential Grenfell Tower block in Latimer Road, West London.

Firefighters react as a huge fire engulfs the Grenfell Tower early June 14, 2017 in west London.

Expressing his heartfelt sympathy to those who have been affected by the tragedy in London, UUP MLA Andy Allen said: "With a number of tower blocks in Belfast recently refurbished or now undergoing refurbishment, I have contacted the Northern Ireland Housing Executive so people can be assured that any materials used for the cladding, insulation and general renovation of tower blocks do not present a fire hazard".

London mayor Sadiq Khan said in a statement: "There will be a great many questions over the coming days as to the cause of this tragedy".

Around 250 firefighters, 40 fire engines, 100 medics and 100 Metropolitan Police officials are at the spot and trying to evacuate residents from the tower as well as those from buildings nearby.

The building was also the subject of warnings of fire risk by a group called Grenfell Action Group in 2016.

Petrified residents were seen throwing themselves and their children out of windows to avoid being burned to death - others made ropes by tying bed sheets together or used them as makeshift parachutes and jumped.

Nearly 70 people were rushed to hospital, and 250 firefighters were on site at one point during the day.

"I sat there watching my house burn down and watching people cry for help who couldn't come down", Mamudu said. "They couldn't stop the fire".

It is understood that "several hundred" people would have been in the block when the fire broke out shortly after midnight, a lot of them sleeping.

"This is an unprecedented incident". She says there were a number of fatalities, but that she could not confirm the numbers because of the "complexity of the building".

Police said: "At this stage we are aware of two people being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation". Endless numbers of people.

Residents are still trapped inside the building.

The London Fire Brigade confirmed that crews were "systematically" searching the building.

Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton said firefighters expected to be on the scene for at least another 24 hours and she would not speculate about the cause of the blaze.

"That was the last time I heard from her", he said.

Prime Minister Theresa May is "deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life", said Downing Street.

The group said there was one entry and exit to the tower during improvement works and it had issues with evacuation procedures.

"Our thoughts are with everyone involved in this truly shocking fire at Grenfell Tower", Cundy said earlier in a statement on Wednesday. "People have been bringing water, clothes, anything they've got to help, out to the cordon".

Nassima Boutrig, who lives opposite the building, said she was awakened by sirens and smoke so thick that it filled her home. New front doors for each flat were also supposed to withstand a fire for up to 30 minutes.

"This is a multi-ethnic, multicultural, diverse community that just didn't get served by the people representing them", he said.
