'Dead Woman Walking': Amid Election Fallout, Theresa May Stands On Shaky Ground

The British Prime Minister Theresa May is struggling to reassert her leadership, having called an election three years early hoping to strengthen her hand going into Brexit negotiations - only to see the gamble backfire spectacularly.

UNIVERSITY of the West Indies political scientist Dr Hamid Ghany is adopting a wait-and-see approach over the possible impact on Trinidad and Tobago of last Thursday's British general election, when the Conservative government lost 13 seats and is now relying on Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) for a working majority in Parliament.

Two recently re-elected Conservative MPs have spoken out about the prospect of forming a government with the Northern Irish party the Democratic Unionist Party.

Sunday's newspapers were unsparing, with The Observer writing: "Discredited, humiliated, diminished".

The strength of any deal looks set to be tested when the Commons meets, with Jeremy Corbyn vowing to try to bring down the Government by defeating Mrs May in Parliament and insisting: "I can still be prime minister".

Ms Cooper, who has been one of Mr Corbyn's fiercest Labour critics, insisted the party is now united behind the leader despite the civil war which raged between him and his MPs a year ago.

On the DUP deal, she added: "If DUP vote for the Queen's Speech and Budget, I don't have a problem with that".

But in a dramatic twist just before midnight on Sunday, Sky sources said No. 10's account of the talks had been issued in error and the DUP had not yet reached any agreement with the Tories.

There was no mention of what concessions the DUP may have asked for, amid growing concern about the influence of a party opposed to abortion and gay marriage.

But the DUP's controversial policies - out of kilter with mainstream Conservative party views - has prompted Defense Secretary Michael Fallon to tell the BBC that a formal coalition is off the table as the only common ground with the DUP is on "big issues" such as security and the economy.

"Theresa May is a dead woman walking and the only question is how long she remains on death row", said George Osborne, who had been sacked as United Kingdom chancellor when May took over at 10 Downing Street after David Cameron resigned as PM after the Brexit referendum in June 2016.

Senior party figures have cautioned against any immediate leadership challenge, saying it would cause only further disruption as Britain prepares to start talks with Brussels as early as June 19.

The announcement came after May lost Downing St. chiefs of staff, Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill, who resigned on Saturday.

If neither party can command a majority in parliament for their Queen's Speech, it is likely a fresh election would be called.

Many senior Conservatives say May should stay, for now, to provide stability.

The Conservatives won 318 out of 650 seats - throwing away a 17-seat majority.

The DUP and Irish nationalists Sinn Fein are due to restart talks to form a new power-sharing government in Northern Ireland and avoid devolved power reverting to the British parliament in London for the first time in a decade. The DUP, although it wants to leave the European Union, will insist on keeping the single market that allows the free flow of goods across the UK's border with Ireland. Labour's better-than-expected electoral performance was largely due to massive backing from young voters angry over education cuts, university fees and Brexit.
