At least 36 people died after a gunman burst into a Manila casino, firing shots and setting gaming tables alight, the Philippine Presidential Spokesperson said yesterday, in what officials believe was a botched robbery attempt. He said the focus of the investigation now is figuring out the identity and background of the suspect, who killed himself after the early Friday attack.

Terrorist outfit Islamic State has claimed the Philippines casino attack that killed at least 37 people.

Most of the patients were suffering the effects of smoke inhalation and some had injuries such as fractures, she said, adding none had gunshot wounds.

The ministry said that it has also directed the representative office in Manila to set up an ad hoc task force to follow the latest developments and determine whether there are any more Taiwanese casualties.

Terrorism concerns are widespread in the Philippines, where President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law across region the size of South Korea last week in response to ISIS-linked militants' besieging the majority Muslim city of Marawi.

Stephen Reilly, the resort's chief operating officer, said only guards on the complex's perimeter are armed.

Just after midnight on Friday local time, a man burst into the Resorts World building near Manila's global airport.

The attacker has reportedly been described as a tall, English-speaking man with a pale complexion.

"Islamic State fighters carried out the Manila attack in the Philippines", the militant group's Amaq news agency said.

Dela Rosa said security footage showed the gunman ignoring a guard who tried to question him at the complex's entrance, then going straight to the casino. Trump said he was "closely monitoring the situation". He stole more than $2 million worth of casino chips, though he apparently abandoned them in a toilet soon after.

The gunman committed suicide inside a hotel room by immolating himself about five hours after storming the casino with an M4 assault rifle and a bottle of gasoline that he used to start the fire, Philippine National Police Director-General Ronald dela Rosa said.

"I was about to return to the second floor from my break when I saw people running".

Hundreds of guests and employees rushed out of the resort after the gunman began shooting on the second floor, hotel employees fleeing the scene told CNN Philippines.
