House Intel Committee issues subpoenas in Russian election & unmasking investigations - RT America

US intelligence agencies reported in January that Russian President Vladimir Putin oversaw a campaign of computer hacking, fake news and propaganda meant to swing the election to Republican Trump over his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton. Names of Americans swept up incidentally in the collection of intelligence are normally masked, or kept redacted, in intelligence briefings, but under the law, national security officials can request that these names be revealed, or unmasked. All the allegations have been dismissed by Mr Trump as fake news.Comey reportedly has notes of a February 14 encounter with Trump in which he says the president urged him to back off the FBI investigation of Flynn.

"I hope both parties can put aside politics and just get to the bottom of what happened", Swalwell said.

On Wednesday, committee Chairman Devin Nunes asked the agencies for details of any requests made by two top Obama administration aides and the former Central Intelligence Agency director to "unmask" Trump campaign advisers inadvertently picked up in top-secret foreign communications intercepts, according to congressional sources.

President Trump tweeted Thursday that the real issue surrounding the Russian Federation investigation is the "unmasking" of people.

The subpoena for Cohen comes as the congressional investigations into ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation advance beyond formal requests for information from Trump associates.

"Today the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence approved subpoenas to be issued as part of the ongoing investigation into Russian active measures during the 2016 campaign", the release stated. Mr. Brennan, Ms. Rice and Ms. Power didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Cohen, a longtime attorney for the Trump Organization, remains a personal lawyer for Trump.

Cohen, who had refused an earlier request for information, saying it was "not capable of being answered", told the AP on Tuesday that he would comply with subpoenas, should they be issued. He served as a cable television surrogate for the Republican during the presidential campaign.

His testimony will be one of the most anticipated aspects of the Russia investigation given that Comey allegedly reported in internal memos that Trump had asked him to end his investigation into Flynn's contacts with Russian officials.

Calls and emails to Kasowitz's NY firm were not immediately returned on Wednesday. The Russian government denied knowing anything about such a plan.

Cohen was a fierce defender of Trump during the campaign, often haranguing probing reporters and famously challenging a CNN reporter live on-air to name the specific polls that showed then-candidate Trump behind his rival, Hillary Clinton.

Cohen's business associates in the taxi enterprise included a number of men from the former Soviet Union, including his Ukrainian-born father-in-law.

These were said to be duplicative of the ones already issued by the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Epshteyn, who grew up in Moscow, worked a short time in the White House press office.
