Jeff Sessions offered to resign amid tension with Donald Trump

He later added, after being pressed again on the matter: "I said I have not had a discussion with him on the question".

The president reportedly was angered by Mr. Sessions' decision earlier this year to recuse himself from any Russian Federation investigations.

According to thehill.com, a new report says that in light of rising tensions with President Trump, Sessions floated the idea of him resigning.

When the reporter persisted, saying the answer looked ominous for Mr. Sessions, Mr. Spicer said, "If I haven't had a discussion with him [the president] on a subject, I tend not to speak on it".

Jeff Sessions was one of Trump's most reliable backers, shares Trump's contempt for civil rights and the rights of immigrants, and has been on the job for less than four months-and the relationship is already going to hell.

Sessions remains at the Justice Department, where a spokeswoman told CNN that he is not stepping down.

The offer to resign was first reported by ABC News.

Two sources close to POTUS say #45 can't get over the fact that Sessions recused himself from the federal investigation into Trump's campaign team, on which Sessions held a major role. He privately blames Sessions' recusal for the expansion of the Russian Federation investigation and the naming of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special prosecutor.

Of course, we've seen Trump rant about the Justice Department on Twitter, upset about his Islamophobic travel ban not being backed in its original iteration.

Sessions was Trump's first supporter in the Senate and was an enthusiastic backer throughout the campaign - standing with Trump through multiple controversies.

He has also blamed Sessions for the fallout from an executive order that the president signed putting in place a travel ban on seven primarily Muslim countries, which courts have blocked. And Sessions' own team has become a part of Trump's inner circle: former Sessions chief of staff Rick Dearborn is now Trump's deputy chief of staff, and former Sessions spokesman Stephen Miller has evolved into a highly influential figure as Trump's policy director and speechwriter.
