The burnt facade of a tower block is seen as firefighters tackle a serious fire at Latimer Road in West London.

Alhajali was involved in the Syrian Solidarity Campaign, an organisation that wants to bring democracy to Syria.

He returned alone to their flat on the 14th floor, where he was trapped for two hours.

The Syria Solidarity Campaign group paid tribute to al-Hajali, saying: "Mohammed undertook a risky journey to flee war and death in Syria, only to meet it here in the United Kingdom, in his own home".

When the fire reached his flat, he said goodbye to his friend and asked him to say goodbye to his family, who he had been unable to reach.

He said: "Mohammed undertook a unsafe journey to flee war and death in Syria, only to meet it here in the United Kingdom, in his own home".

"He came to Britain to study and start afresh, but death chased him all the way here to the United Kingdom".

A Syrian refugee has become the first victim killed in the Grenfell Tower tragedy to be named. "We absolutely agree that a thorough investigation into Building Regulations should take place immediately".

The brothers along with their family had fled Daraa in southern Syria - the cradle of the revolution against Syrian president Bashar al-Assad - three years ago and were granted asylum in the UK.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family and friends".

His brother Omar Alhajali was also caught up in the blaze but was found in hospital in a stable condition.

The death toll has climbed to 17 since the blaze began early Wednesday morning, with officials saying it is expected to rise as they search the building.

The student arrived in the United Kingdom four years ago after fleeing his home in Daraa, Syria and crossing the Mediterranean Sea from Turkey. Commander Stuart Cundy said 17 people are now in critical condition and police are seeking to identify and locate the people who continue to be missing.
