British-born, Caribbean-roots racer, Lewis Hamilton, has claimed his sixth win in the Canadian Grand Prix. Even when pitting, Hamilton had gained such a large margin at the front that he was able to change tires and return to the track while still retaining the lead. "The team needed this one-two after the tough race we had in Monaco and I'm really impressed by what the team has done to get everything together".

'We had damage on the front wing which we did not notice initially, so we missed a free pit stop under the Safety Car'.

The four-time champion pitted for fresh rubber at the end of lap 49, and with 20 laps remaining began to hunt down Ferrari team-mate Raikkonen, in sixth, who in turn was chasing the trio of Ricciardo and the impressive Force India pair of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon. "I can't think of a better place to do it".

But there was yet more disappointment for Fernando Alonso and McLaren when the double world champion's engine gave up yet again two laps from the finish, leaving the struggling outfit still the only team on the grid to yet score a point.

Vettel was not particularly slow out of the blocks, but as Bottas dived underneath the German, and Verstappen raced around the outside, the driver who had finished either first or second at every round of the season so far, was suddenly on the back foot.

Verstappen, who had started from fifth, was at least doing his part to keep Hamilton honest when the pack was released on lap five. "I had a bit of a lock-up but I knew there was an opportunity and I dived in".

"It was still a challenge but it was like the other races I've had here where I've qualified in the lead and it's been so well-managed".

"I've never seen a group of people with such determination to win and to get back on top, and to get a one-two here is wonderful and I'm proud to be part of that".

Hamilton blew Vettel away in qualifying with the fastest lap ever seen in Montreal before leading from start to finish at the seventh round of this see-saw championship battle.

"I wanted to get a trophy", said Vettel after being told that he looked like a man on a mission in the closing stages of the race. The Brazilian inspired Hamilton to pursue a career in Formula One, the driver he was so desperate to emulate.

"You can never let yourself get discouraged", he said.

Shortly afterwards, Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz tangled with Haas' Romain Grosjean on the curving straight between Turns Two and Three. He also entered the record books as the second-youngest driver of all time to score.

Canadian teenage rookie Lance Stroll answered some of his critics by scoring his first points in Formula One for Williams, crossing the line in ninth place to the cheers of a sell-out home crowd.

The win was the 56th of Hamilton's career.
