Rain has final say after Williamson's 100 against Australia

In 87 years of global cricket since New Zealand played their first Test in 1930, the only tournament they have won was when they beat India in the 2000 Champions Trophy final.

But heavens opened again when Australia were three for 53 in nine overs.

A 10th over rain interruption reduced the match to 46-overs per side.

The teams took a point apiece - a result that was arguably of most benefit to Group A rivals England, who launched a tournament featuring the world´s top eight one-day global sides with an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh at the Oval on Thursday.

Williamson had laid the foundation for better, taking a particular liking to all-rounder John Hastings, off whom he muscled 42 runs in 25 balls but Luke Ronchi's frenetic 65 was the only other substantial contribution.

Josh Hazlewood finished with six for 52, the second best bowling figures in the tournament's history.

But Australia were dealt a massive blow in the first delivery of the next over in the form of Warner, who edged one to Luke Ronchi behind the stumps of the bowling of Trent Boult.

Williamson's departure heralded a mini collapse by the Kiwis as they lost the remaining six wickets over the next six overs.

"We're right behind [the ACA] and what they are trying to do for the players and as partners of the game as well", he said.

Smith also hinted at pace being his primary weapon in Australia's opening match against New Zealand which comes as no surprise considering the quality of resources at his disposal.

WATCH: All three Australia wickets!

The players left the field and never returned as the rain settled in a case of déjà vu.

They were outclassed in the Melbourne decider by an Australian side who start among the favourites at the eight-nation tournament. With the ball there, they came and bowled aggressively.

"The wickets over here are pretty good, and the bowlers are going to have to be at the very top of their game as a result".

With a bit of rain along with heavy cloud forecast forecast for Friday, the conditions are suitable for swing and New Zealand fast bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee could prove to be a handful for the Australian batsmen.

Mitchell Starc then dropped Ronchi at mid-on when he had 54 - remarkably, on this evidence, his first ODI half-century in 37 innings.

Williamson, after one crunching early pull, had been ticking along nicely in the background, and was joined by Ross Taylor for a serene third-wicket stand of 99.

Hastings and Stoinis are excellent lower-order batsmen as well and Australia captain Steve Smith may include one of them in the playing XI on Friday and field three fast bowlers.

His fellow opener, Aaron Finch fell to Adam Milne in the next and after hitting four fours in his 16-ball knock, Moises Henriques was next to go - a thick inside edge onto his pad giving Milne a simple return catch.
