Temperatures Climbing Inland as Deserts Brace for 120-Degree Heat

According to the National Weather Service, a heat advisory is issued within 12 hours of the onset of extremely risky heat conditions.

Many desert locations, including Phoenix, could climb as high as 115 to 120 degrees Sunday through Wednesday, the weather service said.

Temperatures are expected to soar into the 100s in parts of the Bay Area over Father's Day weekend and well into the next week, according to the National Weather Service in Monterey.

The official excessive heat warning is in effect from noon Sunday to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The advisory will remain in effect from 11 a.m. Monday to 9 p.m. on Wednesday as temperatures are expected to reach 100-106 degrees. That could rival the all-time high temperature of 122 degrees set at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport in 1990.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions these coming days, especially by people who participate in outdoor activities, older adults, caretakers of infants and children and those sensitive to heat, county officials said in a news release. Locally higher temperatures are possible.

"Always be hydrating with water, seeking shade and if you don't have air conditioning, seek a cooling center", Bartling said.

Excessive heat watches, similar to heat advisories, are issued when conditions are favorable for an excessive heat event in the next 24 to 72 hours, while excessive heat warnings are issued when the maximum heat index temperature is expected to be 105-degrees or higher for at least two days and night time air temperatures will not drop below 75-degrees.

To start off the weekend, the weather service posted a tweet to remind us why we should be thankful for having a desk job come Monday.

Heat will also scorch the central valley of California, where cities such as Bakersfield, Fresno and Sacramento will see highs over 100 degrees.
