US airstrike kills several civilians in Afghanistan

Abdul Rahman was a potential candidate to become the IS leader in Afghanistan following Abu Sayed's death in a U.S airstrike last month.

Afghan officials said Friday that US warplanes killed 16 civilians as they tried to flee an area in eastern Afghanistan controlled by Islamic State militants, but the USA military insisted the dead had been extremist fighters. "He found out just like those before him that there are no safe havens in Afghanistan".

"The militants were observed loading weapons in to a vehicle and were under surveillance until the vehicle was destroyed by an airstrike", said Bob Purtiman a spokesman for the US forces in Afghanistan.

As part of an increased campaign against both ISIL and the Taliban, the dominant militant group in Afghanistan, the USA air force has dropped almost 2,000 weapons in the country as of the end of July, compared to fewer than 1,400 in all of a year ago.

Gen Nicholson has vowed to defeat ISIL militants in Afghanistan this year.

The Thursday strike in Kunar province killed Abdul Rahman, who U.S. Forces-Afghanistan in a statement identified as the provincial emir for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria-Khorasan, or ISIS-K, the Central Asian ISIS offshoot. "It was not a valley or a mountainous area".

Despite the presence of thousands of foreign boots on the ground، Afghanistan has been rocked by an increase in terrorist attacks، some of them carried out by the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group mainly active in Nangarhar province. Since its emergence, the terror group has targeted villages in several districts in the province, killing and abducting hundreds of people and setting their homes on fire.

They were initially denied U.S visas, but following President Trump's personal intervention, they were able to travel to the U.S.
